Music
At Highwood Copse, we enable children to feel that they are musical and develop a life-long love of music. Our focus is on developing the skills, knowledge and understanding children need in order to become confident composers, performers and listeners. Our curriculum introduces children to all forms of music from around the world and fosters a respect of those music traditions. Children develop their musical skills through our robust curriculum based on the Model Music Curriculum, with additional emphasis on the Kodaly and Dalcrose music teaching methods in Foundation stage and KS1. Children have opportunities to sing, play tuned and untuned instruments, improvise and compose, learn to read various forms of music notation, listen and respond to music in their weekly lessons with a specialist music teacher.
All children including those with SEND and who are entitled to PP have varied opportunities to perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions.
At Highwood Copse we follow the Model Music Curriculum (non-statutory guidance for music teaching) that sets out sequences of learning in the following areas that all contribute towards an increasing development of musicianship:
- Singing
- Listening
- Composing
- Performing/Instrument performance.
